Born in South Africa, BJ Watling relocated to New Zealand when he was 10 years old. He was part of the Under-19 squad for the World Cup in Bangladesh in 2003-04 and made an impression on selectors. Just weeks later he was chosen to play his first Test against Pakistan, where he scored an unbeaten 60.
