Jeevan Mendis to Colin Munro. Leg spinner length ball, down leg side on the front foot working, to backward square leg for 1 run, fielded by Mendis. A clinical New Zealand performance has seen them trounce an abject Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in Cardiff. Martin Guptill (73*) and Colin Munro (58*) made light work of the target with a pair of aggressive fifties, taking the Kiwis home with more than 33 overs to spare. Sri Lanka found the edge fairly regularly but couldn't build any pressure with the luck going against them and a small total on the board. In truth though they lost this match in the first innings, unable to withstand Matt Henry (29-3) and Lockie Ferguson (29-3) nipping the ball around at high pace. It was a mightily impressive display on a green surface and would have caused any team serious trouble. They were ably backed up by some superb catches and athletic ground fielding to keep Dimuth Karunaratne always on the back foot. The Sri Lankan skipper scrapped his way to an unbeaten half century, becoming just the second man to carry his bat in a World Cup match, however it was never going to be enough. He will be looking for a big improvement from his side for their next match against Afghanistan at this same ground on Tuesday. Kane Williamson will be content with a similar performance as they move to The Oval to face Bangladesh on Wednesday.

Jeevan Mendis to Martin Guptill. Slider length ball, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, to backward point for 1 run, mis-fielded by de Silva. These drinks will taste very fine indeed for Guptill and Munro, they are on the verge of sealing a crushing victory over Sri Lanka. Karunaratne and his team will want to forget today, nothing has worked out for them.

APPEAL! Thisara Perera to Colin Munro. Short, down leg side down the track driving, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, by Perera, appeal made for Caught. Hopeful appeal and Karunaratne takes a punt on a review. It's a waste though, Munro was miles away from making contact and survives to carry on the carnage.

OUT! Bowled. Lockie Ferguson to Lasith Malinga. Full toss, off stump backing away Steer, missed to. Cleaned him up, Malinga is no match for the ferocious Ferguson and the stumps are in tatters just like this Sri Lankan innings. That was a sensational bowling and fielding display by New Zealand to kick-start their World Cup campaign in style. Matt Henry got things rolling with an incisive new ball spell, before Lockie Ferguson ripped through the middle order with some eye-catching pace. Dimuth Karunaratne did his best to hold things together for Sri Lanka with a stoic half century, however he was mostly powerless as the carnage unfolded at the other end. 137 should be a simple target for the Black Caps but strange things can happen with the added pressure of a World Cup and a global audience watching on.

OUT! Caught. Trent Boult to Suranga Lakmal. Short, down leg side on the back foot pulling, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to short extra cover, by Santner. Boult gets himself a wicket to leave Sri Lanka on the verge of being bowled out. Lakmal got in an ugly tangle against a well directed bouncer and could only awkwardly spoon the ball into the offside. Santner accepts the dolly of a catch, the Black Caps are bossing this contest.

W
OUT! Caught. Jimmy Neesham to Isuru Udana. Length ball, off stump on the front foot flick, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to mid on, by Henry. That's soft, awful batting and certainly not what Sri Lanka need in this situation. Karunaratne looks on helplessly from the non-striker's end, he looks distraught with the way his team has batted today. Udana has shown in the past that he has batting ability but he's just gifted his wicket to Neesham here by chipping it straight to a fielder.

OUT! Caught. Mitchell Santner to Thisara Perera. Stock length ball, outside off stump on the front foot Slog, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to long on, by Boult. Taken in the deep, Santner gets the breakthrough just as things were beginning to look up for Sri Lanka. Thisara couldn't resist a filthy swipe with the ball given some flight and it skewed off the inner-half of the blade tamely into the safe hands of Boult.

FREE HIT. SIX! Jimmy Neesham to Thisara Perera. Length ball, down leg side on the front foot driving, well timed in the air under control over long on for 6 runs. Thisara makes full use of the free hit with a brutal thump way back over the long on fence. This partnership is really starting to blossom, Sri Lanka are digging in well.

SIX! Colin de Grandhomme to Thisara Perera. Off cutter short, down leg side on the back foot pulling, well timed in the air under control over deep mid wicket for 6 runs. Thisara Perera is going to look to counter-attack here so we could be in for some fireworks. His only ODI century came against New Zealand so he knows how to blast this attack over the ropes.

OUT! Caught. Lockie Ferguson to Jeevan Mendis. Seaming away length ball, down leg side on the front foot working, leading edge to gully, by Neesham. The carnage continues, Jeevan Mendis joins the procession of batsmen walking off the field with a glum look on his face. A half-hearted stroke from the left-hander and the ball pops to gully, big credit to Williamson for having a man positioned there allowing Neesham to scoop up the catch. Ferguson is bowling some serious heat and the Sri Lankan batsmen can't handle it.

OUT! Caught. Colin de Grandhomme to Angelo Mathews. Seaming away length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Latham. Another bowler strikes in their first over, de Grandhomme gets Mathews to leave Sri Lanka in the mire. He looks innocuous but de Grandhomme is very threatening with a little bit of assistance from the surface in these conditions. The line and length forces a tentative prod, Mathews can only get a feather and Latham pouches gleefully. The Kiwis are loving this.

OUT! L.B.W. Lockie Ferguson to Dhananjaya de Silva. Seaming in length ball, outside off stump on the back foot defending, hit pad to. Sheer pace does the trick, Ferguson tastes success in his first over to leave Sri Lanka on the ropes. Dhananjaya de Silva was pinned on the back foot despite a relatively full length and the ball was through him before the bat could come down. Height might have been a doubt but the umpire was confident enough to raise the finger and the batsman trudged off without using the review. Karunaratne really needs to find someone to stick with him and build a partnership.

OUT! Caught. Matt Henry to Kusal Mendis. Seaming away length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, outside edge to second slip, by Guptill. What a beauty, Henry is on a roll and Kusal Mendis can do nothing about it. Perfect line and length with some nip from the deck, the edge flies quickly and Guptill snaffles it diving to his left. New Zealand are rampant and Sri Lanka are wobbling. Hat-trick ball coming up, the atmosphere builds.

OUT! Caught. Matt Henry to Kusal Perera. Length ball, to leg on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to mid off, by de Grandhomme. Massive wicket, Henry strikes for the second time this morning and lets out a huge roar in delight. Kusal Perera was always going to carry on with the aggressive approach but it's cost him dearly on this occasion, the ball sticking in the surface to cause him to go through the stroke too early. The fielder had plenty of time to think about it and de Grandhomme gobbled it up with casual ease.

OUT! L.B.W. Matt Henry to Lahiru Thirimanne. Seaming in length ball, to leg on the front foot working, hit pad to. Vociferous appeal, the umpire thinks long and hard before shaking his head. Williamson asks the bowler and keeper for their thoughts before signalling for an early review. Henry got the ball to nip back into the left-hander after pitching in line with leg stump, ball tracking shows the three reds that the Kiwis wanted. All action start in Cardiff, fantastic review by Williamson.

SIX! Suranga Lakmal to Colin Munro. Length ball, middle stump down the track driving, well timed in the air under control over long on for 6 runs. Wonderful batting, Munro anticipates the length will be fuller this time so charges towards the bowler to get the momentum into the shot. There are short straight boundaries at Cardiff, however this would've been six on most grounds.
